Course Overview
Basic Computing is designed for beginners and those who want to refresh essential digital skills. The course focuses on everyday tools and workflows used in offices and higher education: Windows OS basics, file & folder management, Microsoft Word, Excel (foundations), PowerPoint, email, and safe internet usage.
- Structure: 8 weeks — evening sessions, Monday to Thursday, plus 2 weekly practical exercises.
- Format: Live instructor-led classes (virtual), and downloadable datasets.
- Class length: 40-minutes per session.

Learning Outcomes
After completing this course learners will be able to:
- Navigate Windows and manage files & folders efficiently.
- Create, format and proof professional Word documents.
- Build, format and perform basic calculations in Excel (tables, formulas, simple charts).
- Design clear slide decks in PowerPoint for presentations.
- Use email and cloud storage professionally, and follow basic online security best practices.
Assessment & Certificate
Assessment is practical and applied — we test real use of tools rather than theory-only questions.
- Weekly practical exercises: short tasks to practise new skills.
- Quizzes: short quizzes after each major topic to confirm understanding.
- Final practical project: a capstone mini-project (e.g., build a basic Excel workbook, a Word report, and a short presentation) demonstrating integrated skills.
Certificate: Students who complete required attendance and pass the final practical project receive a Certificate of Competency — Basic Computing (digital and printable). Digital badges suitable for LinkedIn are also issued.
